Delights of Ephemera invites you to consider the significance of ephemera in the context of art exhibits and events. Assignments and activities cover topics including traditional and experimental forms of ephemera; the collection of ephemera; and the function and importance of ephemera as historical document and work of art.
Over the term, you will design and make, by hand, four (4) prototypes for works of ephemera responding to specific parameters. For the final project, you will revisit one of these 4 prototypes and research a plan for its mass-production and distribution (actual production and distribution is not required, only a plan for doing so).
The general aim of the course is for students to develop a sophisticated understanding of the methods and uses of ephemera. In particular, the class will function as a brainstorming lab about formal and conceptual relationships, or the different ways that the form of an ephemeral product can represent the content of the event it represents.
